Oda Lisa has  been totally blind since 1995.  When I asked her about it, and how she's able to surf the Internet, write stories etc,  here's what she had to say:

"My blindness is caused by Retinitis Pigmentosa(RP), a congenital retinal disease.  I use the computer with the aid of a screen reader, phonetic software that outputs to a voice synthesizer.  My computer's voice is called "Rocco" and he has a bass, British accent.  Blindness has been the tradeoff between having visual advantages and having a chance at a fuller understanding of spiritual matters.  I'm not visually distracted and that is a definite advantage.  Blindness is less of a challenge for me because I trust that God continually straightens my pathway.  That paternal promise is scriptural.  Then more to the point, Scripture details the ultimate promise, Jesus, who has a miraculous history of restoring sight and life to humankind.  I have full faith that my physical sight and more will return when I shake off this earthy body.  Therefore, RP is a temporary condition."

A Question of Trust

by Oda Lisa Hernandez

Saren Newcastle is a mature, totally independent journalist--she thinks. During a three-day interview assignment in the Kenai region of Alaska, she changes her heart and mind about her empty kind of  independence. There, she encounters Gordon Sommers, a reclusive Englishman with a terrible secret in his past. The rustic Alaskan setting presents an array of difficulties for her, a native Texan and "city girl." Taken out of her comfort zone she realizes that she had been living with a false sense of security all along. Sommers' witnessing words and ways break through her wall of defensiveness. A series of mild mishaps teaches her to put her total trust in God rather than in her own knowledge. Finally, she discovers Sommers' secret and helps him to reconcile with his tragic past. Included in the back of the book are three recipes: Rubio's Enchiladas Verdes, Spinach Lasagna 101, and Sommers' Potato and Leek Soup.

Good Brother

My brother was an average child,

blessed with extraordinary gifts.

As he grew in his Father's favor,

he appeared as anyone else.

His ways were keen, creative, and kind,

his standard, "Let all be my friend."

Even so, my brother was murdered.

His tortured face was streaked with blood.

Perdition missed my brother's sweet cause,

regarded him less than he was.

Still, he lives through the love in my heart.

His whispering words guide my prayers.

I hope for his cure for my sorrows,

while he waits where no questions have care.

Then, when he hastens me to come home,

my good brother has saved the world.

Oda Lisa's Favorite Scripture:

The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Luke 4:18 - 19
