Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw aside everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  HEBREWS 12:1-2 (NIV)

My mom was diagnosed with cancer on Oct. 1, 1993 and went to be with our Lord one month later on Nov. 2. 1993.  I wrote this song shortly after she crossed over.  It taps into a conversation I had with her a few days after she was diagnosed with cancer.

Knowing she was my #1 Fan and that my music had always been very important to her, I said " If you're not here, you won't know what happens."  Her response was "I'll know. And according to God's Word, she does know!!

One Empty Chair symbolizes to me that no matter what I do, my mom is in that great cloud of witnesses talked about in Heb. 12:1.   As I "press  toward the goal for the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14),  I believe Mama knows!!

You may think of your loved one who's gone on ahead as the most beautiful rose in Heaven.  Truth is, to those who've accepted Jesus as their Savior, we're all made perfect and beautiful... in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye.

ONE EMPTY CHAIR - 1993
words & music by Beth Williams

I'm gonna sing on the Opry before my life is through
It's something me & momma dreamed I would do
The house will be packed, but for one empty chair
It really won't be empty, momma said she'd be there

CHORUS
They'll be one empty chair on the front row that night
reserved seating & a single red rose
They'll be one empty chair on the front row that night
reserved seating for Heaven's most beautiful rose

They'll be laughing & singing, fiddles & guitar
Daddy will be smiling at the big country stars
As I walk on the stage, tears will fall from his eyes
for the wife of 40 years isn't there by his side

CHORUS
They'll be one empty chair on the front row that night
reserved seating & a single red rose
They'll be one empty chair on the front row that night
reserved seating for Heaven's most beautiful rose

BRIDGE
Oh she'll be happy in Heaven that night,
and telling everybody she meets
How she saw me on the Opry & with love shining bright
from the front row, she held a rose out to me
