"ONE EMPTY CHAIR" Countin
Clouds |
I was going from room to room at a nursing home inviting residents to come to my "Keeping Time with Beth" program when I came to a room where a well manicured woman was holding a calendar with a pink stick em note on it that said " Retama Park, 6 pm, May 10". I invited this woman to come to the music program with me and, looking from the clock to the stick 'em note, then back to the clock, she said she couldn't leave her room. I explained that it wasn't even yet 2:00 and if someone was coming to get her at 6:00 pm, she had plenty of time to enjoy the music. But no, she wouldn't leave her room. I found myself writing this song that evening. The following month, I went back to the facility, and searching out the nurse, asked her to tell me about this woman. She said the woman had Alzheimer's and no longer had any sense of reality, except to know that the person she had been in love with for over 20 years came to visit her everyday. Love was all that remained, and all that mattered to her. On the day I was there, they were going to the horse races at Retama Park. The message? Love never ends. SAM
WILL BE HERE SOON She looks from her watch to
the loud ticking clock In a pastel of colors, hair
neatly brushed CHORUS In a garden of flowers, beyond
the windowsill CHORUS |
